Corporate headquarters+high-rise office building design: Shanghai Expo Binjiang Dingbo Building/case study

Design: David Chipperfield Architects.

Adjacent to the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art (an art museum converted from a power plant), the World Expo Binjiang Dingbo Building is a newly built commercial and office building located in an important location along the Huangpu River, with a total area of approximately 60000 square meters of commercial space and various types of office. Above ground building area 57500m ², Underground building area of 43500m ²。.

The Dingbo Building echoes the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art, respecting the latter’s dominance over the skyline. Together, the two buildings define a new public square. The concept of building volume is formed by three stacked blocks, and as the height of the building increases, its volume gradually decreases. This stacking also draws inspiration from the size of the Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art and establishes a strong dialogue with the surrounding urban environment. From the east side, this building looks like a golden shaped pagoda temple, facing the Jianghe Square and gradually retreating to a scale close to people. This retreat breaks the traditional composition of towers and podiums, creating a series of outdoor landscape terraces facing the Huangpu River. Looking northwest from the elevated road, there is no forward or backward relationship between the three blocks, presenting a straight tower..

The indoor volume is dominated by a multi story high atrium and is connected to the natural landscape on the terrace. The huge fa ç ade windows face the Huangpu River and extend the atrium space onto these landscape terraces. The curtain wall adopts three-dimensional vertical components, emphasizing the vertical development of stacked volume while also utilizing the depth of the components for shading. Inspired by traditional Chinese architectural materials, these components are constructed from dark brown glazed clay panels. When viewed from a distance, it makes the building shine, while when closely observed, the clay board has a strong and natural texture..
