The modern turn: space and society in Guangzhou (1842-1938)   SpaceandSocietyinCanton(1842-1938)   As a port of communication between China and the world from the 16th century to the early 19th century, Guangzhou has a unique and important position.

Since then, Shamian was also designated as a concession.

Guangzhou was reduced to the battlefield of the two Opium Wars.

In this context, the “modern turn” conference will discuss how Guangzhou gradually adapted to the changing world, how to contact and benefit from modern thought, science, trade and industry, how to regenerate from the ruins and rebuild its leading position in South China during the social evolution from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China from 1842 to 1938.

Since the 19th century, under the influence of the European Industrial Revolution and the legalization of unequal treaties, the trade and exchanges between Guangzhou and the world have changed dramatically.
