Zhao Chen: the cultural charm of Finnish Architecture in my eyes (Part I)

I should be a Chinese architect who arrived there earlier.

We were keen on the architectural tradition in each other’s culture.

Once they become friends, they are lifelong friends.” When we met Maku, we were very young.

There are quite a lot of cold and “White Nights” in a year.

He chose the traditional Chinese “tower” as his master’s research topic and came to China to do research.

Finnish wood architecture is well-known internationally, which is reflected in its success in two aspects: Research on it as the most ecological building material under the trend of sustainable development after the 1990s; As well as an extremely good inheritance and development with regional cultural traditions..

Maku has become the best guide for me to understand Finnish architectural culture.

These uplifted rocks are all red brown granite, and the most extensive growth on the ground is continuous forest vegetation, which is basically composed of pine trees called “Finnish pine”.

Since then, I have continued to communicate with relevant scholars from Maku and Helsinki Polytechnic University (today’s University of Alto).

Because my interest in western culture is to explore the core values of modern civilization from the perspective of architectural culture, especially the differences and similarities between Chinese architecture and Western architecture and cultural background, I often sensitively capture and find some interesting connections and internal principles.

Maku began to lead the “vernadoc” which is supported by ICOMOS in 2002.

In retrospect, I can know more about Finnish Architecture and culture, thanks in large part to Markku mattilar, a Finnish architect I knew in my early years.

People who have traveled in Finland will have memories of the lakes, rocks, pine trees and other natural landscapes in Finland.

We can understand it this way: Finland’s territory is a huge granite ground between the Arctic Ocean and the Baltic Sea, which is high in the north and low in the south.

Finland has special natural and ecological environmental factors such as geography and climate, vast territory and few people, and the characteristics of people and folk culture are very obvious.

In sharp contrast to the huge differences and rich diversity of China’s natural and geographical environment, the natural environment of this country can only be described by oneness.

Both sides have novel feelings.

Finnish wood architecture first benefits from the excellent construction wood of “Finnish pine”, which is also the most important tree in the land with a forest coverage of more than 80%.

Human activities are very dependent on the indoor space environment provided by buildings.

Just like the surface of the Baltic Sea facing Helsinki, the granite rocks surrounded by thousands of lakes and the continuous and towering Finnish pine forest, Finland is a quiet country.

In fact, the difference between the ups and downs of this rock is not sharp.

My team and I have become the most important participants and benefited from each other.

Finland’s per capita reading and drinking are among the best in the world.

A considerable part of the charm of Finnish Architecture to me comes from the full construction cultural value in its traditional and modern architecture, in which wooden architecture occupies a very heavy weight.

Finnish culture is also characterized by tranquility and reflection.

Today, as a part of Europe, what is the special relationship between Finnish architectural culture, which can be proud of in contemporary civilization, and “Modernity”? This will be the basic starting point of my essay—— Glamour 1: significance of construction.

It fulfilled the experience taught to me by another Swiss friend: “Finns seem cold in interpersonal communication, but they have deep acquaintance in their heart.

In addition, I once sailed in the Baltic Sea one day and one night to Helsinki port.

Since we met in the 1980s, we have become lifelong friends.

The so-called calm of the sea and the lack of taste of the sea also left me a strong impression in contrast with China’s sea.

vilhelm helander, Professor of architectural history and theory at the then Helsinki University of Technology (HUT), I went to the university to give a lecture on Chinese traditional architectural culture for a week, and was able to explore architecture all over Finland at the same time.

I have also had the motivation to write about this experience many times, because I can’t be driven by actual needs, but just stay at the level of ideas that haven’t been implemented.

Author: Zhao Chen, Professor, doctoral supervisor, architectural historian, School of architecture and urban planning, Nanjing University—— Introduction: Finland impression Finland is a country I have visited many times; Finnish Architecture and Finnish culture occupy a very important share in my personal cognitive system of architectural culture; It can also be said that Finnish Architecture has promoted the formation of my architectural cultural concept, which is worth writing.

With this article, I also express my deep respect for this lifelong Finnish friend.

Then, in October 1991, at the invitation of him and Prof.

Therefore, its landform can also be described as islands and Peninsula like rock ground isolated by a large number of lakes.

I was deeply impressed by the help I provided him.

Those low-lying places form many lakes of different sizes, which is the origin of the so-called “country of thousands of lakes”.
