Yiyun Bishan Hotel, Huangshan/Shanghai Yanyang Architectural Design Studio

Yiyun · Bishan Boutique Inn, Huangshan.

The venue is located in a traditional village with a long history, surrounded by traditional residences with typical emblem style elements. There are both Ming and Qing architecture with a long history, as well as newly built villager houses that overlap modern and contemporary styles. Our site is located in a relatively deep area of this village, and to reach here, one must pass through the winding and winding village alleys that are either wide or narrow..

When I first came to survey the site, I still had a hint of confusion. Cars cannot directly reach the site, and the buildings in the village are uneven, the site is limited, and the scenery is not good..

But when I stepped on it, I stood in the field, watching the surrounding green tiles and white walls, as well as the staggered horse head walls. In the distance, smoke rises from the kitchen, and the sound is heard from the alley. The aroma of the food mixed with the smoky smell of firewood wafts into the nose. I suddenly felt that it was possible to set aside some inherent impressions and labels, start from the actual site, and hide the buildings in the village, creating an introverted and solitary world. Integrating into the village yet having an extremely contrasting space with the seemingly chaotic, intricate, and diverse environment outside!.

Discover order from a disorderly condition.

The architectural texture of traditional Chinese villages is accumulated through natural growth and historical sedimentation, scattered and disorderly yet full of vitality. The texture of the surrounding buildings where the project is located is the same. It is not horizontal or vertical, but rather crooked and irregular in shape, very disorderly..

At the beginning, it did cause some trouble. I always felt that stuffing a building block into such a compact site felt like there was no “scenery” or “space”, and the utilization rate was not high. After repeated reflection, “Since we want to create an introverted space, why not introduce some Chinese garden thinking? Completely isolated from the external environment, create an internal world, and create an extremely pure, pure, and quiet internal space in a complex enclosure.”.

After determining the principles, I originally intended to create a modern building that was in stark contrast to the surrounding buildings. However, the government regulatory department has approved that “as a traditional ancient village, Bishan Village has the principle of protecting its appearance and must have elements of emblem style architecture.” However, we do not want to replicate a traditional emblem style architecture. The formal inheritance is neither innovative nor breakthrough, nor does it conform to the living habits of contemporary people. We hope to inherit some of its spiritual core rather than its appearance and form. So, “How to combine traditional architectural elements with modern forms and lifestyles?” has always been a key issue for us to consider..

The design strategy of the venue has not been significantly adjusted. After filling in various functions, we retained the century old trees and ancient wells in the site, and then implanted courtyards and courtyards into various building blocks. In the gaps between each block, we embedded large or small inner courtyards for the transformation and transition between virtual and real, and formed a visual center of gravity. While creating rich internal visual imagery, it also creates a transition and connection between the interior and exterior of the building, as well as between nature, through the use of inner courtyards and courtyards..
