Special Explanation Registration | “Viewing Museums from Outside to Inside” – Exploring the Architectural Design of the Wang Tomb Exhibition

Museums are social service institutions established for the collection, research, protection, display, and dissemination of human and natural history, human achievements, natural wonders, social memories, and more. In addition to meeting the above functions, museum buildings also have cultural significance. Mr. He Jingtang, one of the designers of the Wang Tomb Exhibition Area of the South Yue King Museum (formerly the West Han South Yue King Museum), once said, “Architecture has duality, it is both material wealth and spiritual product; it is both a product of technology and artistic creation.”.

The Wang Tomb Exhibition Area was designed by Mo Bozhi and He Jingtang in 1986. The first phase of the comprehensive exhibition building and tomb chamber was completed in 1989, and the main exhibition building of the second phase was completed and put into use in 1993. On the basis of protecting the tomb of King Wen of South Vietnam, the overall project organically connects three different sequences of spaces: the comprehensive exhibition building, the ancient tomb area, and the main exhibition building, interpreting many cultural elements of the South Vietnamese period with modern techniques, and achieving an organic combination of South Vietnamese culture from two thousand years ago and modern culture. This architectural design has won domestic and international architectural awards such as the “World Architecture Excellence of the 20th Century”, the First Prize for Excellent Design by the Ministry of Construction in 1991, and the National Excellent Design Gold Award in 1991. It is an outstanding representative of Lingnan modern architecture..
