Interview with Professor Chen Xingyi by Guangming Daily: Wake up old buildings and beautify new villages

When the opportunity came, my team and I went deep into the corners of the Central Plains to explore a new way to closely integrate “teaching, learning and using”.

Unfortunately, many stone houses have been uninhabited.

The North West Shangcun Village mentioned at the beginning is a very common village in the Central Plains.

Agritainment, experience points and tourist attractions were in full swing, and the popularity of stone houses became more and more popular.

How can such a good resource be used? I couldn’t help thinking.

When the meal was ordered, we ate at a fellow villager’s house, and a large pot of steaming stew was served.

After the survey, we spent three months to plan a “panorama of rural development” and promote it from conception to reality.

The Twelfth Meeting Village also impressed me.

Today, the Twelfth Meeting Village has become a “well-off village”.

There are only 8 old people left in the village.

Chen Xingyi (first from the right) is investigating in the countryside.

When I just went to investigate, I found that the whole village was dilapidated and withered, and many homesteads were overgrown with weeds.

There was an old locust tree with a history of more than 1500 years in the village and many red stories were hidden there.

The original flavor immediately inspired me.

I began to think about how to stimulate the talents and sense of responsibility of teachers and students to serve the national strategy? Soon, the school launched the “Beautiful Village Action Plan” with the loud horn of poverty alleviation.

Because of the hot weather, I used to walk around the construction site wearing a straw hat, and everyone gave me a nickname: “Professor Straw Hat”.

Gradually, villagers living outside returned to their hometown.

We realized that how to optimize the living environment while protecting the ancient buildings and let the villagers live in peace and then work happily is the key to drive the village out of poverty and become rich.

After the survey, we have proposed a wealth generation model for the local area that closely combines red resources with green ecology and stimulates industrial vitality.

There are less than 50 households in the village.

After more than 10 years of research, I deeply felt the amazing changes that have taken place in China’s rural areas.

Wake up old buildings and beautify new villages Narrator: Chen Xingyi, former dean and professor of the School of Architecture and Art Design of Henan University of Technology Author: Guangming Daily (September 14, 2022, 2007 edition) [Scholars’ Narration] In the midsummer of 2018, I worked in Beixishang Village, Jiaozuo City, Henan Province for a month.

We decided to improve the environment and integrate space as a breakthrough.

As a scholar, how can I contribute to such changes? The most important thing is to devote ourselves to the countryside and take root in the land to create an intellectual security for fellow villagers to live and work in peace and contentment.

Since then, this straw hat has walked into more villages with me.

The roads are more unblocked, the environment is more beautiful, and the public space and ecological pattern are more reasonable.

The scattered stone dwellings are a living architectural textbook.

Ten years ago, our college established the Central Plains Traditional Village Architectural Culture and Art Research Center.

As soon as we entered the village, we were attracted by its fortresses, stone walls and ancient roads.

The first stop of the “Beautiful Village Action Plan” was chosen here.

For example, maintain the external style of the original residential buildings, transform the idle land into a village history center, an elderly activity center, a temporary children’s playground, a village green space, etc., expand the public activity space of villagers, and enrich their spare time life.

The old people said that during the War of Resistance against Japan and the War of Liberation, the village was once the residence of the Party organization.

Most young people go to work at the foot of the mountain.

Without building a new building or demolishing an old house, the overall ecology of the village has undergone gratifying changes.

Their houses are also typical stone dwellings.
